In October 2016, Tesla partnered with SolarCity to unveil a prototype of its solar roof tile product and announced that shipments would begin in the summer of 2017. In 2018, installation progress was slow; by May of that year, only 12 Tesla tile roofs were connected to the grid in Northern California.
In October 2020, Tesla launched its third version of the solar roof tile. In August 2022, reports surfaced that Tesla might launch Solar Roof v3.5 by the end of the year. As of 2024, Solar Roof had been launched in the United States, Australia, Canada, and parts of Europe.
In February 2026, Tesla announced a major push for its third-generation solar roof (Solar Roof V3).
